Summary
The Workforce Development Specialist will support the Workforce Development Coordinator to carry out employment support services and make job placements for Day Laborers in Yonkers and New York City. The Workforce Development Specialist will assist with the recruitment of potential workers for various job opportunities by screening program participants who express interest for employment readiness, identifying potential barriers to success, and developing plans, alongside the Workforce Development Coordinator, to resolve such barriers, and will facilitate warm hand-off referrals for employment-readyparticipants to organizations providing job training and work experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following and other duties may be assigned:
Operational responsibilities:
Research prospective employers across New York City and Westchester, especially those in fields relevant to trainings provided by the Day Laborer Program (such as those hiring for flaggers, scaffold users, etc.) in collaboration with the Workforce Development Coordinator
Assist with employment intake and assessment.
Provide information to DLP participants with employment or educational barriers. May assess participants with physical or mental disabilities and make appropriate referrals to services
Secure appropriate employment opportunities for day laborers through telephone contact, on-site visits, Internet research and direct correspondence with potential employers.
Attend construction and restaurant-related job fairs and respond to job advertisements posted by businesses, in coordination with the Workforce Development Coordinator.
Assist with administrative and other needs required for direct job placements in coordination with the day laborer and employer by the Workforce Development Coordinator, such as data entry and maintenance of case records.
Conduct post job placement follow-up with day laborers and employers at prescribed intervals, as assigned, and troubleshoot issues that may arise between worker and employer.
Assist the Workforce Development Coordinator in assessing day laborers ongoing employment needs, including opportunities for job upgrades, vocational training and career development opportunities and provide one-on-one assistance.
Support to prepare monthly metric reports detailing the progress organizing the workers and their participation in the job opportunities and workshops. Assist with completion of funding contract deliverables.
Supportive Services Responsibilities:
Assessing the needs of participants enrolled in Bronx and Yonkers Day Laborer programs.
Scheduling meetings with program participants and tracking engagement in databases, as needed.
Referring participants to service providers, as needed.
Advocating for participants and their families regarding school enrollment, health care assistance, and access to other services, as needed.
Assist with planning, coordinating and facilitating job readiness and other relevant workshops for participants with the Workforce Development Coordinator.
Administrative responsibilities:
Shared responsibility for reception, telephones, mail, etc., as needed.
Attend meetings, conferences and seminars as appropriate.
Participate in regular staff meetings and trainings.
Maintain case file and electronic documentation in accordance with contractual requirements.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a Full-Time position, Monday Friday, and will require flexibility for some weekend and evening hours, to meet program participants needs.
Working Conditions and physical demands required:
The demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Ability to travel regularly between the two office locations and surrounding areas for outreach using reliable transportation, traversing streets, ascending/descending stairs, and exposed to outside weather conditions.
Remain in a stationary position at a workstation and use a computer approximately 70% of the time.
Hourly wage for this position is between $27.47 to $30.22
Qualifications
Associates degree in related field or related work experience in job placement, community relations, and employment readiness.
Minimum one (1) year community organizing or customer service experience
Bilingual (English/Spanish)
Knowledge of and familiarity with immigrant and/or day laborer populations.
Ability to work and communicate effectively and sensitively in a multicultural environment.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.)
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines and goals.
