Summary
The Community Organizer will create and facilitate a process for engaging Day Laborers in actively promoting their common interests and enhancing their leadership skills and commitment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Visit paradas in Yonkers and Westchester County regularly to assess worker needs and connection to the resources offered at the Day Laborer Programs center.
Convene and facilitate meetings with day laborer leaders.
Create and coordinate a leadership program for the day laborers and low-wage workers.
Coordinate service delivery to low wageworkers through Catholic Charities' services in housing, immigration, benefits advocacy, etc.
Develop low-wage workers' knowledge, advocacy skills and awareness on US employment rights and laws. Coordinate workshops on workers' rights, immigration, civic participation, etc.
Make presentations, provide information, and solicit input from all stakeholders of the community, including the workers, employers, homeowners, businesses, elected officials, NYPD, organized labor, education, training, employment, and human service providers, legal and immigrant aid providers, food and clothing donors, volunteers, etc.
Prepare monthly metric reports detailing activities of the office and progress organizing the workers.
Assist with regular workforce development training, such as OSHA, and assist with outreach with workforce development program.
Rate of pay is between $27.47 to $30.22 an hour.
Qualifications
Education and/or experience required:
Associate degree (or some college) in related field.
Minimum one (1) year community organizing or client service experience.
Skills, Licenses, and/or competencies required:
Bilingual (English/Spanish)
Familiarity with immigrant and/or day labor populations.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills.
Ability to travel throughout Yonkers and Westchester County.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are generally 9:00 AM to 5 PM Monday - Friday. Modified or additional hours will be required to meet client needs or attend meetings, etc.
Working conditions and physical demands required:
The demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Travel for outreach, presentations, and meetings at least 50% of the time using public transportation, traverse city streets, ascend/descend stairs, and be exposed to outside weather conditions.
Remain in a stationary position when presenting or at a workstation using a computer approximately40% of the time.
Frequently sit for long periods attending meetings.
