Summary:
The Manager of Accounting is an integral member of Catholic Charities Agency Relations Federation Accounting Services team which assists in meeting the fiscal needs (accounting / audit, budgeting, forecasting and managerial reporting) for various affiliated agencies and staff of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York.
The position reports to the CC Sr. Director for Federation Advancement and is responsible for oversight of the Federation Accounting Services team which ensures the timely and accurate preparation of government claims for reimbursement; the coordination of audits; the development of program and administrative budgets, forecasts, and budget modifications as required; the analysis of monthly financial results versus budgets and forecasts, and other ad hoc projects that may be assigned by supervisors.
The Sr. Manager must be a team player with good accounting, reporting, computer, communication, and analytic skills and will provide recommendations to improve the timeliness and accuracy of financial reports, budgets, forecasts, and data. The position has supervisory responsibility of accountants and interns.
Pay range: $130.000 - 140,000 per year.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Governance reporting, monthly accounting and annual audit:
- Utilizing the software within each agency, assist / supervise in the preparation of originating entries, reports to governance structures, monthly financial and managerial statements / variances / reports and annual audit workpapers / reports.
Managerial Reporting:
- Establish and administer the process to produce the annual budget and periodic forecasts; manage the detailed preparation of budgets and forecasts and the explanation of variances; and as a participant in the review meeting process, prepare notes of agreed-upon actions and follow-up that each action point is brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
Development of Budgets & Forecasts
- Working with Program Directors, the Manager will be responsible for compiling and consolidating the Annual Division and supporting Program Budgets and updating and analyzing forecasts throughout the year. Support the CC Agency Relations team and CC Finance in preparing and tracking the department’s annual budget and forecast.
Contract and Grant Management, including:
- Maintaining and monitoring timely and accurate contract / grant accounting including review or processing of (NYS & NYC) claim submissions, preparation of contract budgets and budget modifications.
- Coordination with the Executive Director’s Office and Development team, for new contract (RFPs) and grant applications / renewal process.
Quality Improvements
- Develop and make recommendations, evaluate recommendations of others, and implement agreed-upon solutions to improve internal accounting / operating controls and efficiencies.
- Provide recommendations for internal accounting / operating controls and efficiencies.
- Assist Senior Financial Management in other ad hoc projects, as assigned.
Department Fiscal Management including but not limited to:
- Ensuring CCCS is billing agencies timely and accurately.
- Working with CCCS in developing and monitoring the Federation budget.
- Monitoring federation accounting services employees and consultants’ timesheets.
- Working with CCCS in preparing fiscal reports for federation services.
- Reviewing department invoices for accurate coding.
Special Projects as required - Because of the breadth of skills required, these positions will be asked to assist in other Finance activities.
Position Type and expected hours of work:
This is a full-time position with a travel requirement of as needed basis and not to exceed 3 days a week to offsite remote locations. Days and hours of work are generally 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday - Friday. Additional weekend and evening hours may be required to meet agency deadlines.
Working Conditions and physical demands required:
- Remain in a stationary position at a workstation and use a computer at least 70% of the time
- Ability to maintain physical files and meet competing deadlines.
- Carry a laptop to offsite work locations, willingness to use various (subway, trains, car bus) transportation systems.

Qualifications:
Education and/or experience required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in accounting & 5+ years relevant experience or relevant Master’s Degree or CPA & 4 years relevant experience
Skills, Licenses and/or competencies required:
- Good interpersonal and communication skills - ability to relate and clearly communicate with operating management, financial staff and other departments, including professional writing style.
- Ability to initiate projects, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; exhibit a sense of urgency in performing work.
- Ability to analyze problems and recommendations and pay attention to detail.
- Good computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel* and Word* required.
- Work requires a strong work ethic and exhibiting a sense of urgency in completion of tasks, willingness to work a flexible schedule and a commitment to the mission of Catholic Charities.
